The 6-foot-10 senior is a talented two-way player who can score on the block as well as he can block shots. Throw in decent speed and footwork for a big man, and it’s easy to see why some of the top programs have begun to show significant interest in Fernando. UCF, Alabama, and LSU are the three programs who threw out early offers; but now, Duke is lurking.

The Blue Devils have already reeled in one of the top classes in 2016. The nation’s top prospect, Harry Giles, will head to Durham next year. Joining him will be fellow five-star recruits Frank Jackson and Jayson Tatum, as well as four-star big man Javin DeLaurier. Coach K would like to bring in one more big man in this class. five-star center Marques Bolden remains a target, but Fernando has become one as well. 

Two assistants were at Montverde’s game on Friday night, and Fernando had mentioned that the Blue Devils were recruiting him back at the Hoop Hall Classic a couple of weeks ago. While it’s far from a done deal, it appears that Duke is doing a good job staying in contact with one of the hottest prospects in the country. Look for more of the nation’s top programs to get involved in the coming weeks as well.
