The panel issued a letter to Trump on Friday, demanding testimony from the former president and saying he “personally orchestrated and oversaw” a multi-part effort to overturn the result of the 2020 election.
Trump railed against the subpoena during a rally in Robston, Texas, on Saturday night to support his endorsed candidates in the state.
He continued to push false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him due to widespread voter fraud.
“They sent me a subpoena the other day” Trump said as the crowd booed. “They sent me a subpoena, think of it. These crooked people, these crooked people.
“And the the only thing they don’t invest, they don’t want to do investigate, the only thing they don’t want to do, they won’t investigate, was the corruption that took place in that election, which was massive. And the facts are all there.”
Later, he again hinted toward another run for president in 2024.
“I ran twice, I won twice, and I did much better the second time that I did the first, getting millions more votes in 2020 than we got in 2016,” he said.
“And now, in order to make our county successful, safe and glorious again, I will probably have to do it again.”
Newsweek has contacted a Trump spokesperson for comment.
The committee’s letter is asking Trump to hand over documents by November 4 and provide testimony either at the Capitol or remotely “beginning on or about” November 14 and “continuing on subsequent days if necessary.”
In the letter, lawmakers said: “As demonstrated in our hearings, we have assembled overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and staff, that you personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power.”
They said they recognize that “a subpoena to a former president is a significant and historic action” and added that it was not “taken lightly.”
The panel’s 19 demands for information are mostly for text messages, logs of phone calls or other communications.
It is asking Trump for records of all calls, messages and communications using the encrypted messaging app Signal that Trump placed or received on January 6, 2021.
It is also seeking all photos and videos related to the events of January 6, including Trump’s rally at the Ellipse, the joint session of Congress and the riot itself.
