Your Dog Really Does Know When You’re Sad
If you’ve ever felt like your dog understands you better than most people, you might be right. Studies have shown that not only can our canine companions identify human emotions, but they can “catch” them too.
A 2020 study explored how dogs react when faced with a crying human. Conducted at the animals’ homes, researchers asked the dog’s owner or a complete stranger to pretend to laugh or cry.
They found that the dogs always paid attention to the one crying, whether the stranger or their owner. They also discovered that when the stranger cried, the pet’s stress response rose, suggesting that dogs are capable of empathy for people they have no emotional attachment to.
A 2019 study discovered that a dog’s ability to pick up on their owner’s emotions increases over time. As the oldest domesticated animal, dogs possess a special ability to communicate with humans, which researchers believe is a survival mechanism that is useful to both species.
This skill also means they can tell when you’re sad and want to help. One experiment using glass doors found that dogs tried to get to their owners at a faster rate if they seemed distressed, in comparison to just sitting and humming.
‘The Purest Thing Ever’
The viral video starts with PD’s dog Iris walking into the living room during the night.
“Iris jumped down off the bed the other night and trotted downstairs,” she explained in the captions.
“I checked the ring to see what she was up to…She must have realized I didn’t have my comfort teddy, so she grabbed it and brought it up to me in bed.”
Iris can be seen wagging her tail as she spots the toy on the back of the sofa, before grabbing the teddy and heading back upstairs.
“What did we do to deserve this amazing dog,” she said. “Mom & Dad love you so much Iris.”
TikTokers were touched by Iris’ dedication to her owner, with user A commenting “dogs [are] way better than humans.”
“Sweet baby angel,” said Ceay. “That tailwag got me.”
“They really love unconditionally,” wrote Jenna Atkins.
While dais described the footage as “the purest thing ever.”
