UK-based veterinary company Animal Trust says that dogs can travel in the front seat, but recommend a few alterations to make it as safe and comfortable as possible.

The experts say you should switch off the passenger-side airbag and move the seat as far back as possible, and that, “It’s best for your dog to be able to see out of a window when traveling, or if your pet is prone to motion-sickness, allow them to face forward.”

The U.S.-based lifestyle website PureWow disagrees: “You aren’t doing your dog (or yourself!) any favors by offering up the passenger seat to your pup.”

PureWow says that accidents and airbags are two of the main reasons to be cautious, but also that an unrestrained dog in the front can be a dangerous distraction to the driver.

Having a pet in the front is illegal in Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts, because of the potential distraction, while Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island have strict laws on loose dogs in vehicles.

In the U.K, a driver with an unrestrained pet in a moving vehicle can be fined up to £5,000 ($5,677).
