Many shocking moments were in store for the Umbrellas—Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Viktor (Elliot Page), and the Sparrow Academy version of their brother Ben (Justin H. Min)—in the new episodes.
One of the most surprising of these moments comes towards the end of the new season, when Luther is betrayed by their adoptive father Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
Does Luther Die in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3?
With the Kugelblitz well and truly destroying everything in the known universe it is up to the Umbrellas, Ben, Lila (Ritu Arya), and Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez) to vote on whether they enter Hotel Oblivion, which is in an alternate dimension and they can access through a portal in Hotel Obsidian.
When the side voting to do nothing about the Kugelblitz and accepting their fate wins Hargreeves decides to take matters into his own hands, by killing Luther, which will give the family a reason to rally to the cause.
Ready to get their revenge on the supposed Hotel Oblivion assassin who killed Luther, the Umbrellas head into the portal, with Hargreeves leaving Klaus behind and the character killing himself just before the Kugelblitz destroyed the universe as they knew it.
In the afterlife, Klaus meets with Luther and says that they can just relax there because everyone dies and there’s no point in them trying to get back when the Kugelblitz destroyed everything anyway.
Luther doesn’t accept this, though, and he fights with Klaus to get him to return to life with his newfound powers, which eventually Klaus agrees to do and he wakes up in the Hotel Oblivion with the others.
During the Umbrellas fight against the hotel’s guardians and Hargreeves, Luther does appear to come back to life, but this turns out to just be Klaus bringing his spirit from the afterlife to reveal the truth of what happened to him.
In the end he returns to the afterlife after Klaus uses his powers as long as he is able to, and for all intents and purposes it appears that Luther really is dead.
However, in the closing moments of Season 3 Hargreeves, with the help of Allison, resets the Universe, and this brings Luther back from the dead, albeit with his powers like the rest of the Umbrella Academy.
