After performers such as Rihanna and Cardi B reportedly declined Super Bowl offers in solidarity with Kaepernick, who is litigating the NFL over collusion claims related to his protest, others were calling on Scott to do the same. The hip hop artist anticipated the backlash, so he “consulted” with Kaepernick to get his thoughts, according to a report from Variety.

Scott reportedly didn’t accept the deal right away and instead made the NFL donate $500,000 to a social justice organization called Dream Corps.

From Variety:

However, a report from TMZ denied that there was “mutual respect” following the conversation between the two. Instead, TMZ claims “Colin was not supportive of Travis performing at the Super Bowl, and the [two] men disagreed. Multiple sources characterize the conversation as ‘cordial and not hostile.’”

Kaepernick himself seems to side more with the TMZ report as he’s been retweeting messages that have been denying the original Variety report. He’s shared sentiments from his girlfriend and radio personality Nessa as well has Hot 97 host Ebro.

Although Kaepernick hasn’t released any comments on his own, he retweeted all of the tweets from above, seeming to suggest he sides with the overall message.

Nessa also shared the following message on Instagram:

As for Scott, he released this statement on the issue: “I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in. I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change.”

Atlanta rapper Big Boi was also confirmed by the NFL joining the halftime performance led by Maroon 5. A petition has been made with over 86,000 signatures initially asking the performers to drop out. But the petition has been updated to say, “Tell the Artists to #TakeAKnee.”
