UAB President Ray Watts made the official announcement to cut the football program, along with the rifle and women’s bowling teams, on Dec. 2, 2014. Watts told athletes, supporters and others on at least three occasions that the decision wasn’t made until November. According to AL.com, though, the documents show a decision to cut the programs had been made by September.

The report cites a Sept. 5 memo explaining the decision not to make the announcement during the season. Here’s what it says, according to AL.com:
The report refers back to several dates in the days after September, but before the December announcement, of Watts claiming no decision had been made.
UAB finished its season Nov. 29 with a win at Southern Miss. That gave the Blazers a 6-6 record, but they didn’t receive a bowl invitation once the announcement of the program’s demise was made days later.
