In Variety’s latest cover story, David Fincher hinted that there could be another season of the prestige psychological drama, but also repeated his previous sentiment of how pricey it would be to continue Mindhunter. Fincher executive produced and directed several episodes of the series.
“I don’t know if it makes sense to continue,” Fincher told the publication. “It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.”
However, dollars and cents aside, Fincher wants to return to Mindhunter, and has an unfinished storyline he wants to wrap up. “At some point I’d love to revisit it. The hope was to get all the way up to the late ’90s, early 2000s, hopefully get all the way up to people knocking on the door at Dennis Rader’s house.”
Dennis Rader, commonly known as the BTK Killer, made several appearances throughout the show thus far.
Fincher previously told Vulture in October that the brainy crime drama would not return to Netflix. When asked about whether or not Mindhunter was over for good, he said: “I think probably.”
Similarly, the filmmaker explained that the show was very expensive to make, and wasn’t quite drawing the audience it needed to, considering the cost. He apparently thought about returning to the series after wrapping up Mank—his latest feature film, about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz—but seemed to be leaning against that idea.
“We talked about ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2,” he admitted. “And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.”
Fincher added that the show was “a lot” for him. “We had done the first season of Mindhunter without a showrunner, with me pinch-hitting on a week-by-week basis,” he explained. “We started getting scripts for the second season, and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it. So we tossed it and started over.”
Mindhunter also apparently entailed a 90-hour workweek that absorbed “everything in your life,” which is on par for how famously detail-oriented Fincher can be. But alas, if we do get more Mindhunter, it won’t be for some time.
Until then, while you’re hoping for a third season of Mindhunter (like this writer), the first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix.
