This move comes a day after La Russa officially hired Dave Stewart as his new general manager, replacing the fired Kevin Towers.
Gibson was hired by Arizona as a coach in 2007, then named the interim manager midway through the 2010 season when A.J. Hinch was fired. Gibson was named permanent manager after that season. The Diamondbacks won 94 games and the NL West title in 2011, but finished exactly .500 each of the past two seasons. This year, the Diamondbacks own the worst record in the majors, at 63-96 heading into Friday’s game.
The team released a statement from Gibson on Friday afternoon:
This was Trammell’s fourth year as Gibson’s bench coach. In an odd twist, Trammell will manage the team for the final three games of the season. The games matter to Arizona’s opponent; the Cardinals own a one-game lead on the Pirates in the NL Central.
