Garner died after Staten Island police officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold after NYPD officers confronted Garner about selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. Garner’s death was captured on video and has sparked outrage across the United States.

We’ve already seen athletes involve themselves in silent protest after Rams players did a “hands up, don’t shoot” pose in reference to the situation in Ferguson, Mo., before a game earlier this year.
Rose’s shirt is a reference to Garner’s plea to officers to let him up to breathe as they were trying to restrain him.
UPDATE: Rose left the Bulls’ locker room without speaking to the media after the game, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
